one to one

I took a little time out from most things other than home life and kids these last few weeks. Maybe it was the whole turning 35 thing…

Melodie (age 4)  disclosed something interesting hinting at spending time with just me so I have been concentrating on one to one’s with the kids. If you have a big family or are from one I think you may get this. I think to value the individual child and just focus on them for at least a few hours, say even once a month if possible nurtures an open relationship and a lasting bond. It can be easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of daily life and chores, and if you are the only adult in the household it is easy to shut off and want time alone but do look for the hints in each child when they are reaching out to you. Behaviours that are undesirable can often stem from failed attempts to communicate a need. Don’t you think? So a shared outing or activity, even just a lunch date is never turned down here. I still do this with my 18 year old son and he’s not sick of me yet!

Full focus and total choice by the child in the way of chosen activity is the important part to incorporate (obviously within realistic terms, so trips to the moon or buying a live tiger is out). This gives a demonstration of your confidence in your child and shows that even if it is hard to be heard over the dinner table there will always be times when their opinion counts, is acknowledged and you implement their suggestions.

It is so easy to feel guilt no matter your parenting style or situation and I confess I have been a bit distant lately, so this helps to get grounded and enjoy the simple moments of childhood.

Did I mention my son turned 18?! Maybe this explains my absence, I have been reflecting a lot, I guess it is a milestone and there is no book to refer to that gives definitive advice once parenting an ‘adult’ – haha! If you have teens how do you spend time connecting? I would love to know…

keeping it together

I had a few blog posts on my mind to write about, some cute pics and a few words of parenting wisdom. However, as I was browsing through this past weekends photos and feeling a little harassed as I prioritise my to do’s I came to the conclusion that instead let’s just keep it real. Yes I have lists, yes I have to do’s in various camps of my life. Think KIDS, PETS, WORK, HOUSE, FOOD, MONEY, PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL WELLBEING and it can feel like holy shit, where do I start every morning. Not all, some mornings I spring out of bed ready to embrace the day and kick butt with a smile as I read a quote or listen to a business book via Audible as I brush my teeth 😉

But just so you know, there are also these mornings, where I just need a minute to get my head in the game, guzzle a coffee and wash my face and so I hand her a chocolate bar, don’t judge me! Leave her alone for 5 minutes downstairs, don’t judge me! Come back down strutting my freshly washed face to this…

So in case you are having a ‘bad’ day, your kids want to climb back inside your womb while you try to use the bathroom or they just want to eat all the snacks – shit happens… just kidding! It’s not shit. It’s chocolate.  But yeah shit happens, smile, breathe and pour another coffee.

You got this!

I have a wild confession

a5.JPG

Ok, for about a week I have been so excited to begin the next 30 days! We love being outside, what’s not to love? My kids can run, jump and shout to their hearts content (actually they do that indoors too, a lot, really enthusiastically).

I think we all need nature, in fact I even tried to run a store titled ‘British Wild Life Kids ‘ with nature inspired and craft products not so long ago! It didn’t take off the way I wanted (life events and all that but hey ho all a learning curve, more about those at a later date).

Living in London we are spoilt for choice regarding open spaces, woodland and nature reserves. You heard me right, there is so much nature in the city!

So today I was so excited to begin 30 Days Wild! and to kick us off thought I would link a GoPro action adventure on our Facebook page!! Cool right?!

However in typical harassed ‘Homeschool Bum’ fashion we hit the woods, dog on leash, kids scattered in trees, puddles, wind swaying trees….scene set!

Except Mama forgot to insert the memory card into the camera, that’s correct. No SD card. As in if it wasn’t captured it didn’t happen! Seriously?! The joys of single parenting means I can’t even blame anyone!

“I told you to bring it!”

“That was your job!”

“Can you race home and grab it?!” doesn’t really work with a couple dogs, a backpack and two little ones in tow!!!

Something so silly but you know what’s important, just getting out there, keeping it real, being outside, muddy clothes, wet dog smell and whingey tired children at the end… get outdoors, move, talk, laugh, touch, observe and discuss… you can’t get this from a book.

You have to get rained on, forget your equipment and really just be, in nature, to fully appreciate why children need this. Why everyone needs this.

So for now I leave you with some pics of past adventures, in Devon in fact, but honestly as idyllic as they look nothing beats a grazed knee, a nettle sting, or a wet dog shake in your personal space to make you feel alive outside … to be continued when I get the damn camera working 😉

Are you taking part in 30 Days Wild? Let us know what you are getting up to! We would love ideas and inspiration! #30dayswild

Today was just one of those days where I just felt so grateful to home educate, homeschool, unschool, whatever you want to label it! Just living I guess, together. Experiencing joy and meeting everyone’s suggestion without timely restraints or unnecessary agendas. I spoke about homeschooling here. Going back a couple of years ago I would have no idea how much the decision would impact my life, change it, change me… anyway for now I hope you enjoy the pics of todays ‘classroom’ 🙂
