26 things in 26 weeks

girl-926020_1920.jpg

It occurred to me we are now half way through 2016! How mad is that?! So I thought I would note 26 points that have cemented the realisation that when it comes to this adulting lark we are all just winging it especially when kids or pets are involved but we must still push towards our goals… personal change can be lonely but face the storm anyway!

  1. nobody was hospitalised (thought I would start positive)
  2. if your 2 yr old demands you breastfeed an oreo, a cheerio or a pebble, just breastfeed the damn thing
  3. feather filled sofas contain unimaginable amounts of feathers when your dog decides to rip a seat cushion open overnight (I thought I was in a blizzard for a second)
  4. teenagers aren’t so bad AT ALL
  5. nothing is precious… possessions, privacy, 20 pound notes
  6. kids eat ALOT, seriously, I feel like Jesus except the majority don’t eat fish and I’m out of bread
  7. stepping in dog pee can never not shock you, no matter how many times you slip in it
  8. when you tell a child not to put fingers in a pet rat cage this becomes a thrilling dare and you can bet they will
  9. cats have a knack for demanding to be let in at the most inconvenient times
  10. washing up liquid can happily be used as your go to cleaner/shampoo/laundry detergent because you were far too busy picking a bottle of wine to remember cleaner/shampoo/laundry detergent
  11. your child calls your food/drink spicy because you got so sick of her sampling and regurgitating your meals and drink back onto your plate/into your cup that the minute she glances yours you immediately start waving your hand in front of your face exaggerating ‘spicy’ and some weird animated ritual
  12. toddlers are irrational, testing and trying BUT oh so adorable, vulnerable and innocent so keep calm mamas!
  13. my 4 year old is smarter than me, her logic blows me away daily
  14. ok half way point, lets talk business! write your goals! shit happens when you write things down
  15. implement!!! taking action gets shit done, it’s not rocket science
  16. who you hang with kinda determines who you are, like it or lump it, who you are associating with will shape your life, choose carefully
  17. on that note, toxic people suck, friends, family, this may be painful but ditching those energy vampires will be a great move! Trust me!!
  18. raise your standards, by learning from those more knowledgeable than you, you will soar, do not be intimidated ( fake it till you make it 😉 )
  19. self doubt is your arch nemesis, punch that arsehole in the face, repetitively
  20. people will doubt your plans, keep what you need to close to your chest but also don’t be afraid to express your intentions
  21. look after yourself, everything in your world starts with you so self care is key
  22. love really does make the world go round – give what you can, as often as you can, it will come back around time and time again
  23. the world is a beautiful place and the grass is not always greener, try blooming where you are planted, it changes everything!
  24. no woman is an island – embrace strengths, differences and the help of others
  25. mothers are STRONG, even when you feel weak, you will get through this and if you are really struggling reach out, humans love to help, they really do
  26. be yourself, be kind, smile and laugh and don’t take anything too seriously, this time in 26 weeks anything may have happened 🙂

I hope you are smashing through your hopes and dreams this year, I am trying for sure! Would love to hear about anything that has happened to you so far! Highs or lows progression is what counts

Liebster nomination (part 2)

jim2two

Ahhh! Finally!!  I am excited to complete my nomination by Cymbrie! Apologies for the delay I have bursts of blogging busyness then other projects/homeschool/work/life tear me away!

Now down to the details. 11 questions I was asked:

Your favourite quote?

I am quote crazy and jot down so many so cannot choose but I have to say something my late grandmother used to tell me springs instantly to mind and that is ‘If you can’t be good, be careful’ it has served me pretty well although not always 😉

Why did you start your blog?

Having really enjoyed writing and attempts at blogging in the past and scattered notes and a tendency to overshare documenting my life, a few significant personal setbacks in the last few years made having a blog high on my list of self development priorities this year (TICK)

What is your favorite blog and why? (Please provide a link.)

Ok, I used be crazy about so many US craft blogs, mum blogs and style blogs and yet these days I can barely remember half of them but one I have visited for years and still LOVE is http://bleubirdblog.com/ . Why? In three points because it is clean, stylish and I just want to live in it! 🙂

What is your dream job?

If I knew then I would stop ‘dabbling’ and jump in… I guess I would ultimately have to say farming the land somewhere warm, having animals to care for, teaching others about sustainable semi self sufficient lifestyles and lifestyle design (I enjoy speaking to an audience) and travelling in between with my kids whilst writing my latest novel 🙂

What is your favorite book?

Another impossible one for me, my goodness is it even possible to pick just one in a lifetime. Another blog post with some recommendations is the best I can leave you with! Sorry!! I cannot possibly say one!

The best place you have visited?

I love hanging out at the British Museum to remind me just how insignificant I am in the history of the world! Also I feel rather grounded and full of reflection in Cornwall, UK on a sandy beach.

A place you would love to travel to?

Australia, lengthy roadtrip – I am talking as long as possible. I am a bit Oz obsessed despite never having been (YET!)

What is your favorite thing about yourself?

I have a tendency to ‘get the fuck back up’ when life dishes blows (excuse me as I do swear often for effect as stated on my ‘ABOUT’ page) I guess a more adult way of saying this is that I am resilient and I’m pretty proud of that.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

They will think you are nuts anyway. It took me years to just ‘do me’ and stop being a damn people pleaser (although I still am a bit, but working on it)

What is one of your hidden talents?

Possibly assessing dog behaviour, I spent a lot of time around dogs as a kid, observing them, just being with them. My dogs aren’t overly trained, I am talking about just natural pack behaviour rather than tricks for treats.

How do you decompress after a stressful day?

Strangely to many, our rats. We have adopted quite a few pets rats and you just cannot remain stressed with a few smart and naughty rats clambering over you, trying to outwit each other in stashing food treats! They are far too funny to not feel cheery in their presence! Oh and craft magazines! Wine is good, accompanied by chocolate but truly I rarely sit still so thanks for the reminder to try to chill!

Meet Abdulazez, an 18-year-old photographer, graphic designer and stranded refugee

Originally posted on InSheddingLight:
When I first met Abdulazez Dukhan, 18, we compared our cameras; his Nikon D3000 versus my Cannon Rebel T5i. We were sitting outside of an Eko gas station near Polycastro, Greece, where around 2,000 refugees have been living in tents for months. His English was nearly perfect and his pictures were…

Liebster nomination (part 1)

12715350_10153987926131340_5331741757326759753_n

I was very kindly nominated for a Liebster award by Cymbrie at Good, beautiful and true blog! Thankyou Cymbrie, I shall reveal 11 facts about me and answer the following questions and nominate 11 blogs asking those same questions 🙂

In this 2 part post I will start with 11 facts, then you can eagerly await the second part including your possible nomination!

If I do nominate you feel free to decline, ignore me or tell me to bugger off! I won’t mind a bit.

So here goes!

  1. I am floating somewhere between OCD and a disorganised messy creative daily! This really confuses me, I have the negative traits of both and therefore obsess over what some would call ‘minor details’ like arranging a vase of flowers (I am talking tantrums over getting it just right) yet struggle to keep my sink clear of dishes and my laundry basket overflowing!!
  2. I have 19 pets (yes I did just count using my fingers to be sure).
  3. I was going to call my daughter November Rain (you know Guns n Roses) well luckily for her she was born on the 1st December!
  4. I am obsessed with taking photographs yet know zero about cameras or photography, I have been known to relight my childrens birthday candles and ask them to blow them out again to get a great shot (sorry kids).
  5. I LOVE catching frogs, newts and holding snails – respectfully and I always put them back I should add.
  6. My children ask me why I like to listen to ‘Weed’ music because a lot of the lyrics I sing promote its usage, yet I do not smoke marijuana… I just love acoustic Reggae is all!
  7. I have a geographical tongue (it is pretty gross actually)
  8. on that note I had a suspicious mole surgically removed (thankfully benign) and still miss the ‘malteser’/’my third nipple’ to this day
  9. I love crochet but don’t make things/advance my craft enough, instead I buy craft magazines and yarn and just dream about what I will make soon 🙂
  10. I was a registered nurse and particularly love serving elderly clients with respect and understanding to the point I still remember names and faces
  11. I have the best mother but it took me maybe 25-30 years to fully appreciate how much she supports/is there for me (go hug your mum)

Go check out the wonderful Good Beautiful and True to catch Cymbrie’s facts 🙂

I have a wild confession

a5.JPG

Ok, for about a week I have been so excited to begin the next 30 days! We love being outside, what’s not to love? My kids can run, jump and shout to their hearts content (actually they do that indoors too, a lot, really enthusiastically).

I think we all need nature, in fact I even tried to run a store titled ‘British Wild Life Kids ‘ with nature inspired and craft products not so long ago! It didn’t take off the way I wanted (life events and all that but hey ho all a learning curve, more about those at a later date).

Living in London we are spoilt for choice regarding open spaces, woodland and nature reserves. You heard me right, there is so much nature in the city!

So today I was so excited to begin 30 Days Wild! and to kick us off thought I would link a GoPro action adventure on our Facebook page!! Cool right?!

However in typical harassed ‘Homeschool Bum’ fashion we hit the woods, dog on leash, kids scattered in trees, puddles, wind swaying trees….scene set!

Except Mama forgot to insert the memory card into the camera, that’s correct. No SD card. As in if it wasn’t captured it didn’t happen! Seriously?! The joys of single parenting means I can’t even blame anyone!

“I told you to bring it!”

“That was your job!”

“Can you race home and grab it?!” doesn’t really work with a couple dogs, a backpack and two little ones in tow!!!

Something so silly but you know what’s important, just getting out there, keeping it real, being outside, muddy clothes, wet dog smell and whingey tired children at the end… get outdoors, move, talk, laugh, touch, observe and discuss… you can’t get this from a book.

You have to get rained on, forget your equipment and really just be, in nature, to fully appreciate why children need this. Why everyone needs this.

So for now I leave you with some pics of past adventures, in Devon in fact, but honestly as idyllic as they look nothing beats a grazed knee, a nettle sting, or a wet dog shake in your personal space to make you feel alive outside … to be continued when I get the damn camera working 😉

Are you taking part in 30 Days Wild? Let us know what you are getting up to! We would love ideas and inspiration! #30dayswild
